Great, attentive service. Large menu that offers standard for our region Tex-Mex/ Mexican fare : tacos, enchiladas, quesadillas, combo plates, fajitas (only chicken at lunch time; if you want beef fajitas come for dinner), etc.; “Plates” come standard w/ rice & beans & shredded lettuce and diced tomato. This is also your typical meat,cheese,& flour meal that we see in west Texas ranching country. Mexican food Traditionalists who want less cheese or less carbs/flour with their meal will be disappointed. This is not Mexico or New Mexico and there’s not a mole to be found. This is like a cattle ranching-influenced post-1950’s recipe place. The guacamole was aguacate (avocado) mixed with sour cream (& other ingredients), for example. And the enchiladas rojas sauce is not a red chile-based sauce, but a watered down sauce that’s mildly red and thickened with white flour. As someone with gluten intolerance, I had to settle for nachos after first mistakenly ordering enchiladas (I thought I had them before, there) which I only took a couple bites of, before realizing I could not eat due to detecting flour as an ingredient. Unfortunately, though, my enchilada plate was nearly tasteless anyway. The red sauce had almost no flavor, and the rice and beans were also very flavorless/watery, but slightly salted. Not too greasy, not too salty, or too under- or over-cooked though — which is a plus. The cheese was the mild (kinda flavorless) yellow-colored variety also typical of Texas. This is my opinion — but I know this is a very popular spot! The parking lot is very full all the time. And I’ll probably try it again some day. Maybe order chicken flautas or breakfast if I get there soon enough. For lunch, I re-ordered vegetarian nachos (there was no other flour-less lunch) but with flavorless refried beans as I said, it was just okay. Our waiter however was fantastic. And flavor is very much a matter of taste. ; ) My companion enjoyed her “Southwestern quesadilla” — a mammoth flour tortilla stuffed with chicken, onion, bell peppers, light yellow cheese, with perfect toasty/air pocket marks on each side (it was folded like an oversized floppy soft taco) that looked like it came off a gas-flame comal. Since we were early for lunch @ 11:20, service was prompt. Only two other tables were occupied.
We ordered quesadillas and beef fajitas, and they were delicious! The food was well-seasoned without being too spicy—the flavor was spot on. Portions are very generous, and the atmosphere is colorful and welcoming. Only cash is accepted. I would definitely come back!
This is the little house of Flavor. Only a few tables available. Best Tex Mex for Miles around. I have literally driven 100 miles for thier food. Cash only, call ahead if you want take out for lunch. Worth the drive.
